AWKA—CONTROVERSY has continued to trail the appointment of Prof Godwin Onu as the new Rector of Federal Polytechnic Oko, Anambra State.
Onu was a former Dean of the Faculty of Social Siences at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka before he was named the Rector of the Polytechnic. No fewer than 24 applicants applied for the position before the Federal Government settled for Onu.
However, since he assumed office, there had been petitions from some of the people, who applied for the position with him, with some of them claiming that he was not qualified for the job because he did not have a science background. They also alleged that he bribed his way through before securing the position.
At the Polytechnic, the rumour was that the new Rector might be dropped in view of the petitions coming from many quarters.
But Onu insisted yesterday, that he was more qualified for the job than other candidates who applied for the position.
“I am well qualified to be the Rector of Federal Polytechnic Oko. The advertisement for the position of the Rector specified that anybody with bias in any course offered in the institution was qualified to apply.
I studied Public Administration and Government. There is a Department of Public Administration in the Polytechnic. I had also taught in the Polytechnic for a period of five years before proceeding to the University to continue my teaching career.
“I have several times been an external examiner to the department of Public Administration and Government, as well as an external assessor to the Polytechnic. If I am not qualified, why did they invite me? Public Administration is the heart of political science but it is one issue that has continued to confuse a lot of people,†he said.
