The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Abodunrin Raji has said that the 2010 CNS Open Swimming Championships concluded in Kaduna yesterday was the beginning of good thing to come for the sport in the country.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the event which held at the Murtala Mohammed Square Kaduna, the navy chief who spoke through the Chief of administration, Naval Headquarters, Rear Admiral Bodunrin Raji, said as partners in the tripartite arrangement that made up the Nigerian Swimming Federation, the Nigeria Navy was ready to contribute meaningfully to the development of swimming in the country.
He said that the CNS championship was the resolve of the concession arrangement which the Navy was a partner.
In demonstration of its seriousness to making the partnership work, the CNS said the Navy had completed the construction of an Olympic size swimming pool in One in Rivers state, .and hoped the swimming federation would in future consider holding the annual championship in One.
On his part, the swimming federation President, Babatunde Fatai Williams said the reactivation of the CNS championships was the priority the board set for itself and was happy the CNS approved their proposal.
Ten states, the Navy, Nigeria Army, the Police, Ministry of defence swimming club and the University of Ibadan team attended the three day championships that ended yesterday.
