Sad at the level of decay of facilities in stadia across the country, especially the National Stadium, Lagos, the neglect of sports at the grassroots, lack of programme and planning for elite among other problems, the new minister of sports, Ibrahim Isah Bio, yesterday, agreed with members of the sports family on the need to urgently have sports summit where all members of the sports family will still down to examine the problems, challenges of sports and the way forward.
The summit, the first of its kind is expected to come up with a five-year plan that spells out programme for the development of sports in Nigeria. All members of the sports family, administrators, coaches, sports journalists, athletes and other members of the sports family would be involved.
Bio said the outcome of the summit will be the Bible of sports in Nigeria, “new minister may come and go but the policy and guildline fashioned out at the summit will remain. They may tinker with us but there won’t be any radical change in the sports policy that the summit will fashion out.â€
Unlike others before him, Bio got to the National Stadium at 10:00 a.m. Journalists who had expected the minister to be late to stadium were shocked as he arrived there 10:00 a.m. as promised.
Officials of the Sports Commission had done a lot to hide the rot of the stadium from Bio.
