Bakare leads Nigeria’s quest in Gabon

The failure in Kenya where two Nigerian pro golfers could not find their feet at the Kenyan Open has renewed the resolve by other professional golfers to excel in the continent. Three Nigerians will be flying the country’s flag in Gbaon this weekend.

Following the unimpressive performance of two Nigerian professional golfers in the Kenyan Open, Ikoyi based
pro golfer Bashiru Bakare, Ali Abdullahi and Port Harcourt based  Gift Willy are in the City of Moanda, Gabon battling for a pride of place in the 15th Moanda Golf Championship in Gabon.

The event which teed off on Thursday saw the Nigerians teeing off in the afternoon. According to the organisers, the Nigerians who arrived Moanda early Thursday needed to rest before taking to the course. Bakare who had a brief stay in Europe before returning to Nigeria, appears set to add the Moanda event to his list of trophies. Bakare finished second at last year’s Tour Partners Championship held in Lagos and has been a steady rise since.

Another Nigerian who is not new to international tournaments is Ali Abdullahi. Ali who is based in Zaria is perhaps the most regular Nigerian in the tour in Holland.

Ali few months ago won the Pro event in France, where he represented Nigeria at the Peugeot tournament in France. The winner of the President Cup in Asaba, has a bright prospect of putting up a creditable performance in Moanda, Gabon. Last on the list, is Gift Willy who virtually lives in South Africa, where he plays on the Sunshine Tour. Gift has had a quiet spell this year on the local scene. The tournament which teed off on Thursday ends tomorrow.
