ABUJA—THE controversy trailing the genuineness of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, registration card shown by the former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as evidence of his return to the party deepened, yesterday, as the faction loyal to the Governor, Admiral Murtala Nyako and Senator Jubril Aminu said that everything would be done to frustrate the return bid.
Addressing newsmen in Abuja, a factional chairman of the party in the State, Alhaji Umaru Mijinyawa Kugama who described Atiku Abubakar’s card registration number 5438200 as fake and forged, said that the old registration cards expired in 2009.
He added that new issuance and replacement of the old ones was yet to commence in Adamawa State.
But in a swift reaction, ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar said: “I have fulfilled all constitutional requirements for re-entry into the Peoples’ Democratic Party PDP,†just as he stressed that he was duly registered by his Yeli Ward Chairman, Mr. Vitalis Njobdi, a.k.a. Kosa.
A statement by Atiku’s media office in Abuja, said: “Njobdi is recognized by the National and the Adamawa State secretariats as the authentic chairman of Yeli Ward. This fact has not been disputed by the renegade faction in Adamawa State.†Atiku Abubakar had during the World Press Conference in Abuja, Tuesday, displayed his membership card with the assistance of the other factional Chairman, Chief Medan Teneke.
Kugama said: “New issuance and replacement of registration cards have not been done in Adamawa, the old ones expired in 2009. No genuine membership cards are in circulation and we invited you here to respond to some mischievous statements and claims perpetrated on the Adamawa Chapter of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and his associates.
“During his press conference two days ago, we saw him brandishing what he called his PDP Registration Card which was purportedly issued to him at his Ward, Yelli in Jada Local Government area of Adamawa State. He introduced three persons he identified as chairman of PDP in his Ward, Local Government and State.
“It is unfortunate that the former vice president could stoop so low, to consciously aid and abet impersonation, simply because he is desperate to return to the PDP and use it as a platform in achieving his objective of becoming the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 2011.
“Nigerians would recall that about 10 days ago, the leadership of PDP in Adamawa State led by our amiable Governor, Murtala Hamman-Yero Nyako, three distinguished senators and leadership/representatives of all our elected stakeholders, met with the members of the National Working Committee and resolved that it was not in the best interest of the Party and the good people of Adamawa State for Alhaji Abubakar to return to PDP at this material time.
“From all the evidence before us, Atiku and his associates are bent in re-joining the Party in order to either take illegal control or destroy the Party. The former VP chose to leave the PDP about three years ago, for which we have since struck his name out from our PDP membership register.â€
