Renowned American athletics coach, Ken Gibson has tipped Nigeria to become a major force in world athletics, if only the country can get its acts together.
Gibson was in Nigeria to conduct a coaching clinic for coaches and teachers in Cross Rivers State.
“Nigeria has a world of potentials. All they need is someone to pull everything together.
“Recent years have not been what Nigeria used to be in terms of track and field. You go around the country and see thousands and thousands of people.
“You look at a country like Jamaica being able to do what they did, why can’t Nigeria, with the population they have, with some effort approach that?†Gibson wondered.
He noted that with the likes of coach Lee Evans, a former Olympics 400m champion working in Nigeria, the country stands to benefit. “Lee Evans is working with athletes and trying to locate some more. Nigeria is a big country and should be able to produce quality athletes,†said Gibson. He added that there is too much of soccer in Nigeria and this was harmful to the development of athletics.
