THE National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, Zone D has denied the report that it was planning some rallies to protest the declaration of former President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida for the 2011 Presidential election.
According to a statement by Comrade Rasheed Adetunji and Bolaji Amubioya, Senate President and Deputy Senate President, Zone D, respectively “it is pertinent for us to state here that NANS anywhere in the country has no such plan. Rather, the position of NNS on the issue, according to the resolution of our last convention is that we will not be involved in the attacks and counter-attacks currently going on among aspirants. It was resolved that we will wait and critically assess all the contenders with a view to taking a well informed positionâ€.
The student body further said, “In the light of this, we can say that at no time did NANS as a body of Nigerian students, take a position to oppose the candidature of General Babangida. We therefore advise Nigerians to disregard the sponsored threats as only the ranting of faceless politicians on the pages of newspapers. While we are not holding forth for IBB we repeat that we are not planing any protest whatsoever against him”.
“We therefore call on Nigerian students to be wary of these politicians and resist attempt to be used as political tools and thugs in 2011..One thing is certain; the student movement is prepared to champion a process that will lead to the emergence of reliable and credible leadership in Nigeria once and for allâ€, the statement said.
