Yar’Adua: South-South group asks FEC to save Nigeria

By Victor Ahiuma-Young
A GROUP, under the umbrella of Oil Industry South-South Business Association, OISSBA, has called on the Federal Executive Council, FEC, and other relevant organs of government to save Nigeria from sinking into deeper instability by performing their constitutional role of declaring President Umaru Yar’Adua unfit to continue in office and pave the way for Dr. Goodluck Jonathan to effectively take over as President.

In a statement in Lagos, Coordinator of the group, Mr Austin Ilenre Emuan, said it was clear from all permutations that there was indeed a cabal working assiduously to scuttle the enforcement of the constitutional provision that allowed Jonathan to effectively take over the reins of power.

The statement read in part: “The Oil Industry South South Business Association, OISSBA, has followed unfolding events in the country and Aso Rock in particular with keen interest before and after President Umaru Yar’Adua was returned to the country from his medical trip in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

“It is clear from all permutations that there is indeed a cabal that is working assiduously to scuttle the enforcement of the constitutional provision that allows Dr. Goodluck Jonathan to effectively take over the reins of power should a situation like the prevailing one arise.

“This cabal has been churning out conflicting statements and sometimes outright falsehood to undermine the authority of the Acting President and hoodwink the Nigerian people so as to sustain their fragile hold on power even when it is clear that President Yar’adua is incapacitated.

“OISSBA wishes to add its voice to that of all well-meaning Nigerians and the concerned international community to call on the Federal Executive Council, FEC, and other relevant organs of government to save the nation from this drift and perform their constitutional role of declaring the President unfit to continue in office and pave the way for Dr. Jonathan to effectively take over as President.

“It should be understood that Dr. Jonathan in his capacity as Acting President can only hold forte for a boss whose return to office we cannot guarantee.

“The danger in being Acting President ad infinitum is that he can neither take far reaching decisions nor make long terms plans and we consider this unacceptable against the background of the daunting challenges that the nation is facing both at home and internationally.”
