When Oluwatoyin Safiu Morufu, from Oyo State, met Uloma Beatrice, from Abia State over 16 years ago it was total love at first sight despite differences in culture. But the romance soon turned sour with tragic consequence for the handsome and lanky Morufu.

The tragedy struck in the wee hours of Saturday, March 13th 2010, at Agbara area of Lagos State , residence of the deceased which was said to have been built for Beatrice.

The suspect, Beatrice in her early 40s, is currently being detained at Agbara Police Station and helping the police in their investigation.

According to the brother of the deceased, Mr. Ibrahim, a.k.a,Ibro, the incident happened at Block 22, Igere, Ihunusa Opic Extension, Agbara, which is a secluded area between Lagos/Ogun states border.

The deceased, about 45 years old married Beatrice 16 years ago, but lately had been having running battles with her estranged wife over his decision to marry a second wife. It was learnt that after one of their quarrels, Beatrice moved out of the house and stayed out for six years. Before she moved out, it was learnt that the couple quarelled over the paternity of one of their children.

Morufu married another woman immediately Beatrice moved out of the house.

Narrating how Morufu lost his life, a family source, stated that the suspect who was irked by the fact that her husband married a second wife and went ahead to impregnate her and now executed her plan when Morufu was asleep. At about 1am, when Morufu was was deep asleep, she allegedly poured liquid substance suspected to be acid on his face.

As if that was not enough, Morufu, wallowing in excruciating pain and in an attempt to find help, the suspect, was said to have hacked him to death with a pestle already kept near by for the act.

After killing the man, she called her pastor and the nurse claiming that her husband had been attacked by an assasin who stormed the house. Following her appeal for help, sympathisers rushed to the house and took the husband to the hospital but he died on the way. Her suspicious behaviour attracted the police who arrested her.

“We learnt Morufu died on the way to Ikeja, in Beatrice vehicle, and that when they got to Alakija, she claimed that she did not have enough fuel to get to Ikeja, based on this she turned back and drove the car with little fuel back to their Agbara house, an act which surprised the Nurse”, said a family source.

The police had since visited the scene of incident and obtained various exhibits for the prosecution. It was also learnt that the suspect who is still being detained has made confessional statements to the police. She told the police that she did the act in self defence following a scuttle between them in the middle of the night.

The deceased family are also suspected foul play, saying that the wife could have contracted some people to carry out the act because of the enormity of strength required and exactness with which the attack was carried out. They believed she was assisted in the dastard act by some un-named suspects still at large.

Morufu was a contractor and dealer in building estates and housing materials. He also established a standard cement store and other businesses for Beatrice to keep herself together, Saturday Vanguard gathered.
