THE Nigeria Football Association, NFA, said yesterday that Daniel Amokachi would not face the guillotine following the ouster of the home-based Eagles by the Menas of Niger at the weekend. Niger held Nigeria to a barren draw after a 2-0 victory in the first leg in Niamey. Nigeria did not qualify in the inaugural edition hosted by Sudan and would be conspicuously missing when Cote dÃvoire host the 2nd edition.
Many Nigerians have said that Nigerian football has hit its all time low. But President of NFA, Sani Lulu Abdullahi exonerated Daniel Amokachi from blame and said that he would not be sacked over the embarrassing ouster. “We should be mindful that football is about eleven players on each side. Anything can happen. But Amokachi will not be sacked because he came in on acting capacity. Amodu Shuaibu is the head of the Technical crew. Amokachi came in because Amodu was on leaveâ€, Lulu said.
He however noted that the team did excellently well except scoring goals. “We are all satisfied with the performance of the team. They played absolutely well but the goals refused to come. Amokachi should not be blamed for their ill-luckâ€.
The FA President said that Nigerian coaches would learn from Swede Technical Adviser Lars Lagerback for their own betterment and Nigerian football. “Amokachi will join the technical crew of Lagerback. He will understudy the Technical Adviserâ€, Lulu added.
