Better days are here, for top Nigerian athletes as the Athletics Federation of Nigeria plans to pay the athletes training grants from this season.
But this will all depend on the Federation securing funds from the budget it has sent to the Senate committee on sports. The AFN and other Olympic sports federations have been penciled down by the Senators to receive government’s financial support to enable them carry out their development programmes.
“We have given the committee a budget and hopefully they will act on it. And we are sure to get the much desired government financial backing.
“From this we will ensure that our top athletes and medal potentials are paid grants,†said a top member of the federation. He said that Nigerian athletes will do better with a little bit of financial support.
“We have not been supporting our athletes. All what they have achieved is down to their own efforts. The federation had always cried to the NSC to support the athletes but they always told us there was no budget until the Senate committee stepped into the matter.Once we get the funds, we are going to sit down and work the detail of who will get what,†added the AFN official.
