By Bishop David Oyedepo
Have you observed a particular pattern of mishap, sickness, disease, affliction, plague, death, frustrations, limitations, marital crises, etc, in your paternal or maternal family line?
There are a number of cases that point to the reality of generational afflictions, curses and challenges. When you trace their case history, you will discover that they are hereditary. There are families where nobody rises at all; you cannot trace any house that anyone has built. There are people who have started building houses for the past 16 years, without completing them. There are families where people won’t just get married. Some others will get married today, divorce tomorrow, remarry again and divorce. Somewhere, somehow, somebody had inflicted a curse. Some families suffer untimely death.
For instance, some people have died in hospitals, because the doctors couldn’t locate what their problems were. The doctors would be busy treating one thing, whereas something else is eating up the man, until he dies! God’s Word says: “As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come.” (Proverbs 26:2). Every time you see a curse, there must be a cause.
Most of the challenges of life are traceable to some curses that many people are not aware of. Curses are real! Until you get to their root causes, you can’t be free from them. Curses have roots!
The fundamental root cause of curses:
The curse of the fall of Man: Man’s frustration began at the fall because God placed a curse on man. The curse of sweat and struggles became the portion of the fallen man. Man became subject to the devil after the fall. He became vulnerable to all kinds of vices by the manipulations of the devil. He became a victim of fear and was stripped naked. I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.” (Genesis 3:10).
Man became utterly helpless and vulnerable to satanic wicked rules (Proverbs 29:2). The curse of the fall is the fundamental root of man’s frustrations. Thank God, Jesus came to reconcile man to God. Until one is saved or born again, one lives under the curse of the fall of man. If you cannot be classified as righteous, then you are the wicked God is talking about in Proverbs 3:33 and Isaiah 3:10-11.
Until you are saved, therefore, you remain under the curse of the fall of man. You have no way of escape from the curse of the fall of man as an individual or as a couple, if you neglect the great salvation (Hebrews 2:3). Practical righteousness is your way out of this curse (I John 3:7). Towards the end of this teaching, I will show you how to be saved or be born again.
How shall we escape if we neglect the great salvation (Hebrews 2:3)? So, salvation is our great escape route from the wicked rulership of the devil. So, when you are saved, you are raised up from the devil’s territory. You are no longer under his wicked rulership. You are set free by the Son of God. No wonder, the Bible says: “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” (John 8:36). So, new birth translates you from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of God.
For instance, America is a very great nation. As great as the American nation is, no American law enforcement agent has the legal right to arrest you in Nigeria. You have to be in their territory, before you can be arrested! Until you are saved, you are helpless, and the devil determines the happenings around your life. Salvation is what takes you off his territory into God’s territory. Salvation is your only way of escape from the curse of the fall, which is the fundamental root of man’s frustrations.
Another thing that attracts the curse of the fall of man is wilful disobedience. The first curse recorded in the Bible came as a result of disobedience (Genesis 3:14-19). So, disobedience will still attract this curse any time. That is why we should obey God’s laws. (John 14:15). No one ever contends with God and prospers.
When God is no longer your sufficiency as a couple or single persons, you come under this curse (Jeremiah 17:5). As a parent, you owe your children a parental duty. Show them by example that God is enough. You husband or wife, are you leaning on alternatives? Destroy them so God can reach out to you (Jeremiah 17:7-8).
In summary, the curse of the fall of man is only averted at redemption. You are redeemed (born again) when you confess your sins and accept Jesus as your Lord and your Saviour. You can be born again now if you are set, by saying this prayer: “Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I am a sinner. I cannot help myself. Forgive me my sins. Cleanse me from all unrighteousness. Today, I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Thank You Jesus for saving me! Now I know I am born again!
