BARELY a month ago when two politicians were hacked down by yet to be identified assassins, another chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party in Oyo State, Senator Lekan Balogun, Tuesday night escaped death by the whiskers.
The hoodlums numbering six were said to had besieged the Alarere residence of Senator Balogun who has been the most vocal opposition to the composition of the state executive of the party.
He has unwaveringly distanced himself from the government of the state especially the party’s state executive saying it was illegal. Based on his stance and others in his group, the national secretariat of the party had constituted an implementation committee which has since taken over the function of the state executive of the party.
Senator Balogun had said in many fora that he would be the last person to support the second term bid of the incumbent Governor, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala. But, he stated emphatically that he was not alleging political conspiracy.
When speaking with newsmen after examining various bullet holes on the entrance gate and other parts of the residence, he said he saw one of the National Union of Road Transport Workers in the state carrying out surveillance on his residence before the attack around 11. 30pm.
When Vanguard visited his residence yesterday, expended cartridges littered the ground.
He said he had told the police that he got an intelligence report that his name, Senator Teslim Folarin and the ex-Chairman of the NURTW, Mr. Lateef Akinsola aka Tokyo had been penciled down for elimination, but the police were yet to do something concrete.
While calling on the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ogbonna Onovo to disarm members of the NURTW in the state, he said they knew nothing about politics and yet they could waste lives of people at will.
He said, “I was attacked last night by some hoodlums who were clad in celestial robes. As soon as they came, they banged the gate ordering my security men to open the gate. When they could not gain entry, they started shooting at my residence. But, my personal security men repelled themâ€.
He did not hide the fact that he knew the leader of the group who is a known figure in the NURTW circle.
According to him, he would not hesitate to disclose the name of the person if the security agencies demanded.
His words “I know one of those that attacked me. The police know him too. I have reported several times to the police, but, days later, I would see him walking as a free man on the road again. If they want, we can help them and tell them where the hoodlums hide their weaponsâ€.
Despite the fact that he had reported the suspect to the police several times, he lamented that the suspect still remains a free man up to now which he said endangers many lives in the state.
He commended the State Security Services(SSS) but condemned the DPO Gbagi for his uncooperative attitude.
He said he felt sorry for an ordinary men who may not afford the luxury of hiring personal security men.
Several calls made to the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adisa Baba Bolanta to comment on the attack were not answered.
