GOVERNOR Adams Oshiomhole of Edo state, yesterday, warned against making negative utterances as regards the health of President Umaru Yar’Adua, in order not to give the military any excuse to disrupt the democratic process.
He said that it was as result of the seeming constitutional problem at the presidency that the Governor’s Forum met and “we are convinced that the Acting President, Goodluck Jonathan should be encouraged to continue to act in a way that gives no one the impression that there is a vacuum because the country cannot withstand a vacuumâ€.
“Secondly†he said, “all of us must continue to pray for speedy recovery of the President because that is what out culture said. No one should pray otherwise. Again it is important that we do not give nay one the impression that any one is happy with this unfortunate situation†he stated.
Oshiomhole, who spoke while addressing members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Action Congress said: “we are happy that we were able to find a soltuon which was appreciated here and abroad, that Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan should act as President while President Yar’Adua is recovering.”
There are all kinds of reactions but my own plea is that in all we shall say or do, we must be careful on the need not to do any thing that might give any body the excuse to resort to any act that can possibly lead to the destabilization of the country.
“I think this occasion calls for utmost restraint as we find solution to a matter that was clearly, never envisaged by those who drafted the constitution. I believe that none of us can afford to behave as if we are happy that the President is sick.
I recognize that the country cannot go on without leadership, it is impossible. Which is why I am happy that we all found a consensus that the Vice_President is given full active powers and I am happy that under very difficult circumstances, the Acting President has been able to steer the ship of the state†he stated.
He urged the leadership of the Action Congress to offer constructive suggestions at this point in time, “ so as to strengthen the forces of stability and one that will help the cause of peace and harmony in the nationâ€.
