Head coach John Obuh has invited 21 players for the national U-20 men’s team, Flying Eagles, as he starts the preparations for next year’s African Youth Championship.
The qualifying series for the final competition, slated for Libya, will begin in August, and Obuh is inviting many of the players with whom he won the silver medal at the FIFA U-17 World Cup Nigeria 2009.
Goalkeepers Paul Danjuma, John Felagha and Amos Izuchukwu top the list, with defenders Fortune Chukwudi, Aliyu Mohammed Goyi, Aigbe Oliha, Jacom Mgbam and Kenneth Omeruo are also called.
Others are midfielders George White Agwuocha, Abdul Ajagun, Ramon Azeez, Olaitan Otubanjo, Eddy Onazi, Deji Joel and Obinna Okoro, as well as strikers Terry Envoh, Stanley Okoro, Sani Emmanuel, Omo Ojabu, Olanrewaju Kayode and Edafe Egbedi.
Nigeria will play the winner of the preliminary fixture Togo/Guinea in the first round of the qualifying race, with the first leg scheduled for Nigeria in the third week of July.
Coach Obuh said yesterday: “I want these players to start reporting in Abuja by the morning of Wednesday, 17th March. Anyone who fails to show up will be forfeiting his place.â€
General Secretary (Technical), Coach James Peters added: “All the players are expected in camp. Whoever fails to show up will be kissing goodbye to national team football, and we’re very serious about thisâ€.
