ABAKALIKI—Ebonyi State Government has awarded contract for the conversion of a section of Enugu-Abakaliki highway, totaling about 21 kilometres into a dual carriageway at the cost of N3.8 billion.
The contract was awarded to three construction firms, namely Patan Nigerian Ltd, Brass Engineering and Construction Co Nigeria Ltd and Unity Construction Ltd.
The Personal Assistant to Ebonyi State Governor on Media, Mr. Abia Onyike, who made the disclosure, said that the road stretches from the State Universal Basic Education headquarters to Onuebonyi River, which is a strategic entry point into Abaklaili, the state capital. Onyike said that the decision to dualize the road arose from the need to give a strategic face lift to the entrance of the state capital.
Onyike said that the council equally directed the Task Force on the ban of Okada (motor cycles) on dualized roads in the state capital to reactivate their operations, following reports that Okada riders have started flouting the ban by using dualized roads.
He said that following the provision made in the Master Plan of the Ochudo city for a community residential layout, government had directed the Ministry of Lands, Survey and Housing to provide access roads in the layout and that community leaders were enjoined to cooperate with the staff of the Ministry in the discharge of their duties.
Onyike said that the council endorsed the plan by the Ministry of Lands, Survey and Housing to embark on the demolition of illegal structures at the foot of the Juju Hill area of Abakaliki metropolis.
