MTN Nigeria, last week leveraged on end to end communications solutions expertise of Ericsson Nigeria, to launch one of the largest switches in the world. MTN says the development was in a move to improve quality of service and significantly improve customer experience on the network.
The switch, according to the network, is a result of years of research aimed at shrinking the size of traditional switches while achieving quantum improvement in their capacity to process huge traffic.
Conducting newsmen round the new switch at its Ojota, Lagos located switch centre, Chief Technical officer MTN, Mr Karl Toriola said â€œwe have utmost pleasure to showcase the success of another of MTNâ€™s pioneering efforts, which is the roll-out of our Media Gateway, the first switch of its kind in the world.
This technology is delivered in partnership with Ericsson and this is another manifestation of the ICT revolution that is taking place on the African continent and MTN continues to play a significant part in it. We are unveiling this equipment in consonant with our commitment to providing seamless communications to our teeming customers, using the best technology available. We are always exploring new possibilities by constant research and innovation, which is one of our core values,â€ hevd added.
According to him, the switch will enable MTN to process calls on the network faster, while empowering the company to guarantee even better voice quality on the telephone calls.
Toriola who was flanked by Funmi Omogbenigun, General Manager, Corporate Communications, MTN,Â Lynda Saint-Nwafor, General Manager, Network Planning, Omassan Ogisi Marketing and Corporate Communications Manager Ericsson, and Mr. Chinedum Akaniro, Manager Customer Solution, Ericsson among otherÂ top MTN and Ericsson officials, explained that the new switch has the capacity to handle up to 8 million subscribers at a time, depending on subscribersâ€™ call behaviour.
The switch is said to have low power consumption andÂ more environmentally friendly, just as it will also guarantee improved call set-up and call completion, which means that customers will be able to make calls on the network without much difficulties.
