Let players’ legs talk for me

•Lagerback says at unveiling

By Fidelis Ebu, Abuja
Celebrated newly appointed Eagles’ Technical Adviser, Lars Lagerback who was officially unveiled yesterday, has been described as a dull person whose capability of handling the calibre of the Nigerian national team cannot be vouched for.

Eagles Coach

A Swede journalist, Johan Orrenius, who was in Abuja to cover the unveiling of his compatriot, bared his mind on Lagerback and wondered why Nigeria went for such a coach.

“Lars Lagerback is known in Sweden as a very dull person. I wonder why Nigeria with great passion for football went for such a person.

“He (Lagerback) is from the Northern part of Sweden, and they are noted to be withdrawn. And with the calibre of players in Nigeria, there is a strong doubt that he might not be able to perform. If one recalls the team Nigeria paraded in 1994, 1998 it would be difficult for someone like Lagerback to excel”, Johan Orrenius of Expressen daily in Sweden said.

Querying the rationale behind his appointment as the Eagles Technical Adviser, Orrenius said many players he produced as the Sweden national coach did not progress in their football career.

He also pointed out that the Eagles under Lagerback might find it difficult to survive the group game in South Africa.
But Lagerback during the unveiling expressed appreciation working with the Eagles and the players such as Kanu Nwankwo, but said, “you have to prove yourself but like they say in football, let the feet do the talking. So I thank you very much for everything and I am very proud to be here”.

He said “it’s been a very interesting week. I have been impressed with your hospitality since the day I came to Nigeria.
“I have always been impressed by the Super Eagles and Nigerian football.

“It’s been a fantastic week for me and I feel a lot pride and I am looking forward to having the chance to work with people like Mr. Kanu and other Nigerian players”, he said.

Some have said some tough words, you have to prove yourself but like they say in football, let the feet do the talking, so thank you very much for everything and I am very proud to be here.
