In an apparent move to beat the rainy season and its disruptive nature, the Lagos State Cricket Association have brought forward the 2010 Lagos/EDL knockout cricket tournament to begin this weekend ahead of the original commencement date of March 20, 2010..
Two clubs from the lower division, Ibeju Lekki 2 and Stallion Cricket Clubs have been pitched to play the opening match billed for UNILAG cricket pitch in Akoka today.
According to the fixtures, Ibadan Municipal Cricket Club will on Sunday at the Tafawa Balewa Square Cricket oval take on IPCC, Lagos, while Foundation Cricket Club and Federal Government College, Warri Old Boys Cricket club battle each other for a place in the next round the same day
Chairman of the Lagos Cricket Association, George Wiltshire has said that this year’s edition of the tournament sponsored by Express Discount Limited would prove a hard nut for the top clubs as clubs from the lower division of the local league were out to prove that they are as tough as the best from the elite class.
“It will be interesting, when the contest begins,â€Wiltshire said, adding that the Lagos Asians in particular believe this would be their tournament having won it in the 2007/2008 season. “They don’t want to end the season without a silverware in their cupbard and I think they are serious about it.â€
But the Asians would have their hands full as most clubs are eyeing the prestigious tournament. So far Ibeju Lekki Cricket club 1, who are yet to lose a match this season will look up to this tournament as their special preserve. Also, the likes of Government College Ibadan Old Boys Cricket club, Rocks of Abeokuta and Federal Government College Warri Old Boys are all determined to prove their worth in the tournament which is the 9th in the series.
