TWENTY-FIVE persons have been arrested in Bolo creek, Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State for alleged involvement in illegal bunkering.
Making this known, yesterday, the chairman of the local government, Mr. Victor Tombari Giadom, said they were picked in the early hours of yesterday by men of the Joint Task Force (JTF) during a patrol with some members of the surveillance team recently set up by the state government to assist in the fight against bunkering in the area.
The local government boss, who said he was part of those that made the arrest, added that they had stepped up efforts in the local government to contain the activities of illegal bunkers in the area. According to him, their operations were posing serious threat to fishermen and farmers as farms and aquatic lives were being affected.
Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi had recently asked the state commissioner of police to redeploy the divisional police officers (DPOs) serving in Ogoni to other parts of the state as they were accused of providing cover for illegal bunkers in the area.
It was also in Ogoni part of the state that security operatives, about two years ago, uncovered some illegal petroleum refining points.
