The Benin Golf Club came alive last weekend as a former Captain of the Club, IK Afe celebrated 66 years on earth.
But it’s like this with the game of golf. Golf people usually turn up to banter from the depth of their minds. It was like this with IK Afe when he had to banter with a friend of 35 years, Chief Tom Ikimi.
Afe, a former Assistant General Manager and a former Chairman of Michelin, did not mince words when he proclaimed that for the 35 years he had known Ikimi, it has been a turbulent time with his best friend, Ikimi. He did add however, that nobody could come between him and Ikimi when they are doing battles. Interestingly both are leaders of the Action Congress.
Ikimi had his way too. He claimed that at his age, he could not make new friends, and for that reason alone, he would still be ‘managing’ Afe. Lively banters and this is the reason people turn out for golf.
Over 100 golfers featured at the Afe event. At the close of the day, Ikimi, who provided the numerous trophies for the event, came out as the overall winner. It was like taking home what belongs to the home.
The event came to a climax when wife of the celebrant, Dr. Jacinta Afe, disclosed that the game of golf has indeed helped calm his hubby whom she has known for 33 years. Jacinta, former Head of Service in Edo State and presently Chairman Civil Service Commission in Edo State, had this to say: “Golf must be a great game. It has not been too easy coping with my hubby. All the same, I know his involvement in the game of golf has played some big roles. The game has a way of calming him down.
IK Afe, a former President of the Benin Club is blessed with two sons and two daughters. The first son, Afe Jnr is Audit Manager with MTN while his second son, Ebegne is a computer expert with Oando.
