THE trend of political assassination continued Thursday as a gun totting three-man gang shot dead a local government chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo state.
His name is Alhaji Azeez Adegbile. Until his death, he was the Chirman of the Atiba Local Government. He was killed on Wednesday night in Oyo town around 11.50 when the assassins shot at him through the window when he was sleeping in his room.
According to information gathered, several bullets were rained on him at Odunerin compound around Akodudu area of Isale Oyo.
When the assassins were not sure if he would die, they allegedly sprayed the house with fuel and set it on fire. But the efforts of neighbours prevented the fire from glowing.
Narrating the death of the local government boss, Mr. Mudashiru Adegbile, he said, “he gathered from people around that his brother was fast asleep when the men came with the driver still by the wheel and rained bullets on him.
He said, “after shooting him through the window, they poured petroleum at the entrance of his room and then set it ablaze. But, quick intervention of sympathizers who poured water into the room, prevented him from being burnt. He was later rushed to the hospital where he eventually diedâ€.
“We do not even know whether the killing was linked to politics. Only God knows. The only thing is that we want the government and the police to look into this wicked act and bring the killers to book. The police were here last nightâ€, he said.
Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala described the killing as disturbing. Speaking through Prince Dotun Oyelade, Special Adviser on Public Communication, he said, it was callous and a total aberration considering the relative peace in the party in the state.“
Efforts to get the police were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
