OWERRI—An Imo State High Court sitting in Owerri, has sentenced one Vincent Ogueri and Dr. Boniface Nwachukwu to death by hanging for murder.
The duo were arraigned before the court in 2005, for their alleged involvement in the gruesome murder of a former Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Chief Ogbonnaya Uche.
Trial judge in the matter, Justice A. Ukachukwu, had after reviewing the evidence of the witnesses, as well as the submissions of counsel on both sides, handed down a verdict of “guilty as charged†against the accused persons.
Justice Ukachukwu held that the defence did not convince the court of the innocence of the accused persons in the murder trial and consequently discountenanced their submissions.
It will be recalled that Chief Uche, who was fondly called OGB by his peers, died on 10 February 2003, following injuries he sustained in a brutal attack by gunmen at his residence on 8 February 2003.
The armed hoodlums stormed the Shell Camp, Owerri, residence of Chief Uche in the late evening of the fateful day, shot him at close range, picked some of his personal effects and zoomed off into the night.
OGB, it will be recalled had voluntarily resigned his cabinet post to enable him run for the Orlu senatorial seat on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and willingly decamped to All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, when PDP frustrated his ambition.
