Nigerians may no longer need to travel abroad for hip surgery following the recent success recorded in a cementless hip replacement procedure on a 46-year-old patient. It is the first of its type by two Nigerian medical doctors at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, UPTH, Rivers State.
In their medical innovation, the team of surgeons, headed by Drs. Philip Dowerife Eyimina and Richard Chinedu Echem, beat the normal cement procedures done in the hospital some years ago.
“With the achievement, UPTH becomes the first hospital in the South-South geopolitical zone of the country to perform a cementless hip replacement, just as the institution expects more break-throughs having established the enabling environment.â€
The beneficiary who was diagnosed for secondary osteoarthritis of the left hip had to undergo a three-hour surgery at the main orthopaedic theatre of the hospital using the revolutionary cementless replacement procedure.
The same hip replacement procedure which cost N750, 000 and N900,000 at the health institution, is usually carried out for N4 million and N5 million abroad depending on the state or stage of the ailment.
The cementless procedure is reputed to last an average of 10-15 years and provides for the patient to be easily treated for revision of the surgery if the need arises later in life.
Following the medical feat, the institution’s Chief Medical Director , Prof. Aaron C. Ojule has pledged to re-engineer the five-star tertiary hospital.
