Youths move against third-term seeking lawmakers

By Emma Amaize
SONGHAI—AMUKPE – YOUTHS from the five ethnic nationalities of Delta State, under the auspices of the Delta State Youths Consultative Assembly, DSYCA, weekend, swore to  use every method necessary to stop the uncontrolled ambition of lawmakers in both the State House of Assembly and National Assembly who are manoeuvring  to continue in office for  third and fourth term.

Making obvious their resolve, Saturday, at the maiden meeting of the group, where Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan was endorsed for a second term, the youths said their backing the governor was on the condition that he detached himself from the unconcealed quest of the lawmakers.

Those who attended the meeting at Songhai-Amukpe include the national coordinator of DSYCA, Hendrick Opukeme, presidents of the Urhobo Youths Council – Ambassador Godwin Okporoko, Isoko National Youths Movement – Comrade Zino Onaemor, Ndokwa Youths Council – Comrade Tony Ndanenu, Itsekiri Youths Assembly – Mr. Godwin Utieyen, chairman of the Ijaw Youths Council (Western zone) – Comrade Pamotei Warisuotei and a host of others.

Ijaw leaders in the state under the leadership of Chief Bare Etolor were to first, early this month, to move against the lawmakers in question. The DSYCA in a communiqué at the end of its meeting stated, “Facts have emerged that such political office holders are yet warming up for third and fourth term with a view to imposing themselves on the people of the state and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.”

“The Assembly unanimously rejects any attempt by any legislator in both the State House of Assembly and the National Assembly to perpetuate himself in third and fourth term in office. This Assembly shall employ every means necessary to forestall such unbridled ambitions”.

“Since 1999, majority of the elected representatives in the state and the National Assembly have occupied such elected offices till date with little on no input to their constituencies”, they asserted.

According to them, “The Assembly’s endorsement of Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan for a second term is only on the condition that His Excellency would not directly or indirectly support any legislator for third and fourth term ambition in the State or National Assembly.”

The youths resolved to hold three senatorial affirmation rallies in the three senatorial districts as follows: Delta South- April, 2011, Delta Central-June 2011 and Delta North- August 2011 for Governor Uduaghan , as long as he distances himself from the ambition of the said lawmakers.
