Athletics Federation of Nigeria has opened register for athletes who will compete for honours at the Nkoyo Ibori Youth Athletics Meet billed for Mach 4-6, 2010 atÂ the Oghara Township Stadium, Oghara in Delta State.
The competition which was run for eight consecutive years during the tenure of Mrs. Nkoyo Ibori as first lady of Delta State, returned last year after two years of hiatus. AFN secretary-general, Maria Wophil disclosed during the week that the competition, which is restricted to Under-17 athletes will be a trial competition for the African Region 2 championships billed for Dakar, Senegal May 14-16, 2010.
She disclosed that arrangements are in top gear to have the competition, the first of the season, which is loaded for Nigeria athletes starting with the World Indoor in Dubai, the Africa Championships in Kenya and the Commonwealth Games.
The Nkoyo Ibori championships is one of the competitions that revealed youth talents for the country while it ran itâ€™s full course. Top athletes Damola Osayomi, Blessing Okagbare, Ajoke Odumosu, Endurance Abinuwa, Halimat Ismaila and others like Kesiena Egone and Believe Otorvibhe, who have faded from the athletics circles, cut their athletics teeth with the championships.
AFN president, Chief Solomon Ogba revived the competition with the sole aim of discovering more youth talents in the country.
