Yakasai quits Arewa Consultative Forum over Yar’Adua

By Abdulsalam Muhammed, Kano
KANO— Elder Statesman, and founding father of Arewa Consultative Forum, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai has withdrawn his membership of the Northern Socio-cultural political organization over the body’s recent  pronouncement that ailing President Yar’Adua should transfer power to his deputy.

Alhaji Tanko Yakasai in a Press statement in Kano dissociated himself with the pronouncement of the ACF, but however declared not engage the Organization he founded in any media controversy.

The former Liaison Officer to President Shehu Shagari  noted that “it is not my wish to engage the Organization that I spent a reasonable period of my time to build in media controversy, and in order not prolong the debate, I will like to announce the withdrawal of my membership form Arewa Consultative Forum”.

The Octogenarian stated that the ACF has no legal or moral right to compelled or advise any elected leader to hand over his mandate to any other person, stressing that the ACF stands is not only ‘unconstitutional’ but is  ‘illegal and undemocratic’.

Alhaji Tanko Yakasai decried the ACF position on Yar’Adua saying that it compromised the essence of its objectives, adding that such a stance is not in tandem with the promotion of the unity of the people of the north and protection of their interest.

Yakasai stressed that “I have no doubt in my mind that if it is true that the ACF have declared that President Umaru Musa Yaradua is unfit to govern and the organization has called on him to hand over power to the Vice President, then it cannot be argued that the organization has deviated from its  aims and objectives”

The Elder Statesman argued that no such decision was taken by the body in any of its meeting accusing, pointing out effrontery made to the secretariat of the ACF to call for emergency meeting to clarify its position on the matter yielded no result.
