There can’t be two presidents — Abayomi

By Ise-Oluwa Ige

ABUJA—An Abuja based lawyer, Mr Tunji Abayomi, yesterday, said the sudden return of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua has cancelled the effect of the joint resolution by the two chambers of the National Assembly empowering Dr Jonathan Goodluck as Acting President and Commander-in-Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Abayomi said in clear terms that Dr Goodluck, as at today is Nigeria’s Vice President in the face of the law and not Acting President because there can’t be two heads of government.

His words: “The theory of government as exposed by all constitutions disdains a situation where a nation has two heads of government or two presidents at a time.

“The relationship between the President and his Vice-President is always defined by the president’s will or by the express provision of the Constitution.

“The theoretical basis of all constitutional democracies makes the constitution the supreme law not for its accomplishments at the momentous crisis of government or governance but to establish a proper frame work for orderly government of any nation in all seasons.
