The 13th edition of the Nigeria Oil and GasÂ Industry Games (NOGIG) came to an end last weekend at the Teslim Balogun Stadium Surulere, Lagos with Shell Petroleum Development Corporation (SPDC) emerging the overall winner of the 2010 games.
SPDC finished on top of the medals table which featured eight other companies with a total ofÂ 12 gold, 15 silver and six bronze medals.
The event which was strictly for oil and gas companies featured nine oil companies- SPDC, NNPC, MOBIL, NLNG, CHEVRON, TOTAL, NAOC, PTI and DPR. Athletes from the companies competed 10 events- football, lawn tennis, table tennis, squash, swimming, athletics, golf, 8 ball pool, chess and scrabble.
NNPC which finished second in the last edition, maintained its second place finish with seven gold, six silver and 12 bronzeÂ medals.Â Â Mobil bagged five gold, seven silver and 14 bronze medals to place third, whileÂ NLNG with five gold, two silver and five bronze came forth.Â CHEVRON was fifth withÂ four gold, fiveÂ silver and five bronze medals.
TOTAL which finished fifth in the last edition, dropped to the sixth position with four gold, three silver and five bronze medals.Â NAOC coming in the seventh positionÂ bagged two gold, four silver and 11 bronze.Â PTI placed eighth with two gold and two bronze while DPR got 1 silver and 1 bronze to finish at the rear of the medals table.
According to Dr. Brown Ogbeifun, Manager NNPC, the essence of the competition is to foster unity among workers in the oil and gas industry.
â€œThe major objective is to bring together workers in oil and gas industry to net work and also discuss the issue that is affecting the oil and gas industry in Nigeria and also proffer the wayÂ further,â€ he said.
