If you’re yet to hear his latest single ‘Something About You’, chances are that you don’t live in Nigeria. It’s jamming in the clubs, taking over the streets, and is a first choice filler on the Nigerian air waves.
With beats laid by the ingenious Don Jazz, there’s definitely something about this fast-pace, gentle stroking love song, beautifully rendered by Dr Sid of Mo Hits Records.
Born Sidney Onoriode Esiri, the 30-year-old dental surgeon turned singer struts a tall, huge and dark body frame; though not as dark as label mate Wande Coal. Stage named Dr Sid, he is the child of renowned Nollywood actor, Justus Esiri.
The former Trybes Record signee started exploring his flair for entertainment since his school years taking part in school plays, dance competitions and concerts. His first professional attempt at singing was on the famous 2002 Oya (Let’s Go) track assembled by the combination of Sasha, 2-Shotz, Timi, Del and the Trybesmen (made up of Eldee Kb and Freestyle). Though still in school then, Sid followed up with a debut audio and video single he titled ‘Don’t Stop’.
In the UK, where he moved to after completing his course of study at the University of Ibadan, he worked with JJC & the 419 squad, Felix Duke, KAS a music group called R70 and then D’banj – who was equally a struggling recording artiste at the time.
Apart from music, Sid- short form of his first name Sidney- has served as em cee and sometimes anchor of events, including the MTV Alert concert, Next Nigerian Icon launch, Diamond Bank End of year party (2006), Fusion Charity Fashion Show (2006), The Rhythm Council (Benin and Enugu) and MTv MTN VJ search.
In terms of musical accomplishments, Sid featured 7 of the 15 tracks on Mo Hits All Stars compilation CD titled Curriculum Vitae (CV) and of course featured in videos of Move your body, Booty Call, Close to you and Pere.
He’s also performed at loads of shows including Rhythm Unplugged (2004, 2005), Basket Mouth Uncensored (2005, 2007), Starville Concert (2007), Star Mega Jam (2007), Calabar Carnival (2007), ThisDay Music Festival (2006, 2007) and the Naughty by Nature Concert in 2000.
Something About You is the third single to drop ahead of the singer’s expected maiden album tentatively titled Turning point. It has a not-so-superb video shot by Mo Hits’ go-to-director, Sesan and has been airing for approximately four months.
In this space of time, the single has not only overshadowed the two other singles previously released by the artiste (off the same album) but also increased anticipation for Turning Point. The other two singles are titled Winchi winchi and Pop Something.
