ABEOKUTAâ€”CHAIRMAN, Senate Committee on Education, Dr. Joy Emodi has challenged Nigerian universities to be proactive and make themselves relevant by proving that they are a repository of knowledge which would be employed to develop the country.
Senator Emodi who spoke in Abeokuta,Â while delivering a convocation lecture, noted that the universities must make themselves relevant to the development of the country by contributing useful ideas to government.
According to her, “Nigeria universities must strive to create new paradigms in order to respond to the numerous socio-economic challenges of the 21st Century”.
And to achieve this, Emodi urged the universities to look beyond government for funds to sustain themselves.
â€œNigerian universities must demonstrate relevance to local and international problems by being the repository and generator of knowledge as well as the principal instrument for transmitting accumulated cultural and scientific experiences for socio-economic development,” she said.
