Owerriâ€”The Imo Police Command has arrested 12 suspects for alleged arson at Akano-Umuapu in Ohaji Egbema Local Government Area.
The arrest was sequel to a recent communal clash in the area in which many people were allegedly killed and about 50 houses burnt.
Mr Aloysius Okorie, the Commissioner of Police in the state, announced the arrest in Owerri in an interview with newsmen after visiting the village to assess the extent of destruction.
He confirmed that about 50 houses were burnt by yet to be identified assailants.
Okorie said it was disheartening â€œto see the magnitude of the destruction in a village where majority of the people are farmersâ€™.â€™
He warned people against taking the law into their hands no matter the level of provocation.
The Commissioner urged the people to always allow the law to take its course whenever they felt aggrieved.
He promised that a thorough investigation would be conducted into the crisisÂ to determine the cause and promised to fish out the culprits.
Okorie said the arrested suspects would soon appear in court after police investigations.
He said that he had directed police patrol teams in the area to ensure that there was no further crisis or destruction.
He said normalcy had returned to the area with the presence of the police, and urged the community to return to their homes and live their normal life.
