By Simon Ebegbulem
BENIN—THE Chairman of Etsako West Local Government Council of Edo state, Mallam Gani Audu, Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the Council, Mr Thomas Athema and Chieftain of the PDP in the state, Deacon Domingo Obende, yesterday, dumped the PDP for the Action Congress, AC.

Others that defected to the AC included the treasurer of the PDP in Etsako West, Chief Muhammed Abubakar, Auditor General of the party in the council, Kelvin Muhammed and Mr Daniel Osumah, chairman of ward 11.With the defection of Mallam Audu, the AC is now in control of nine Local Government Councils in the state.

Etsako West is the Local Government Council of the state Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole. Receiving the decampees at Government House Benin City, Governor Oshiomhole informed them that they are joining a movement that is committed to redefining the politics and governance of the state.

“We are actually returning to those core values of democracy, which are about popular participation, consensus building, all inclusiveness and due recognition for the worth of every individual. We are building a movement that recognizes that the future of every politician rests on the acceptability of the people not on the hands of one man, that determines the political future of everyone else,” he stated.

The Governor added that “our commitment to one man one vote is informed by our interest that unless we are conscious of the fact that we owe our office at the pleasure of the electorate, good governance is impossible.”

I am happy that God is using us to show our people that it is possible to be on our feet and fight to conquer than to be on our knees and plead with oppressors to stop oppressing because beneficiaries of a bad system, cannot be persuaded to drop it, they have to be fought and defeated.

Mallam Audu who spoke ealier, said he decided to move the PDP machinery into the AC due to the developmental strides of the Governor, adding that “ we are going to work with you and mobilize for you as we have been doing for the PDP that failed to give the people the desired dividends of democracy all these years”.

Domingo also assured that the entire Akoko now belongs to the AC, just as he urged the Governor to continue to deliver the dividends of democracy, adding that people are dumping the PDP every day due to the dictatorial tendencies of some leaders of the party and as a result “ they have refused to allow internal democracy in the party”.
