ABAKALIKI—Following the alleged plot to unseat Governor Martin Elechi in next year’s general elections, the
opposition camp within the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Ebonyi State has constituted a faction of the party with Mr. Adol Awam as its state chairman.
Factional leader denies Egwu’s backing
The Awam faction, which disagreed that Education Minister, Dr. Sam Egwu was behind the new faction, accused both Governor Elechi and Mr. Dave Umahi, the state PDP chairman of being All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, stalwarts, whose visit to the PDP is the major cause of the political problems in the state.
Awam maintained that Governor Elechi only became a PDP member few days before he was given the PDP governorship nomination in 2007, while Umahi remained the highest financier of the state ANPP until late 2006, when he was made the caretaker chairman of the PDP. The Awam-led faction, insists that both Elechi and Umahi must give way for peace and development to return to the state PDP.
