Ilorin â€” THE Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ogbonna Onovo, has lamented thatÂ “lack of logistics for police operations, uncooperative attitude and/or mutual distrust between the people and the police have always been a crippling challenge to the optimal performance of the force.
Speaking in Ilorin, Kwara State yesterdayÂ while commissioning 20 new Toyota Hilux double cabin Pick-up vans and other security gadgets donated by GovernorBukola SarakiÂ of Kwara State, Onovo said: “All these are fast becoming history as policing is today made easier, highly accessible and efficiently effective.â€™â€™
The IG noted that the quest for sustainable peace and security had become a recurring decimal in any national debate, stressing that security is an imperative essence of every state and the primary function of every government.
He recalled that the Nigeria Police over the years had tried to preserve, protect and promote social peace, safety and stability, and ensuring liberty which is sine qua non for economic development, stressing however that â€œthe Nigeria Police alone cannot ensure adequate internal security without the corresponding cooperation, support and understanding of the people.â€
Onovo noted that the rare show of concern and support by kwara state government was well appreciated, commendable and worthy of emulation addingÂ that kwara state is one of the states in the country where crime rate is very low .
He addedÂ that the efforts of the governor towards adequate security in the state was indeed a glaring demonstration of the primary responsibility of the government, which entails protecting the life, liberty, proper of its citizens and the welfare of her people.
According to him, policing is a collective task and therefore, every hand must be on deck to ensure adequate security of the country as criminals are expected to be exposed by members of the public.
Governor Bukola Saraki in his address commended efforts of the Nigeria Police and Vigilante group in combating crime and criminal activities in the state.
According to him, in recognition of the role of the Police and Vigilante group in crime control, the present administration has always provided the required wherewithal, particularly logistics support to operate.
Security items donated by the Governor include 20 brand new Toyota Hilux double Cabin Pick Up vans, 3 brand new Toyota Corolla Salon cars, 100 Kenwood Walkie Talkies, 120 motorcycles and 400 pieces of Torch lights.
The governor who said he would not relent in his efforts to ensure adequate security in the state to complement the increase in the beehive of business activities in the state hinted that more sophisticated CCTV cameras first of its kind in the neighbourhood which have been mounted across the strategic areas of the state would provide surveillance for easy arrest of criminals.
â€˜â€™the message we are sending to criminals is that kwara state is not a good place for them to do business,Â and we mean it so they must stay away from hereâ€™â€™he stressed.
