The 13th Nigeria Oil and Gas Industry Games began Sunday at the Chevron Recreational Centre, Gbagada, Lagos, after a colourful opening ceremony presided over by Supo Shadiya, Director, NNPC/Chevron Joint Venture.
Eleven companies are participating in the week-long games that will end with the final of the football event at the magnificient Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, on Saturday.
The games which started as a single event and few participating companies have risen to eleven events which include squash, table tennis, scrabble, chess, swimming, athletics and soccer.
Other events featuring at the week-long games include golf and snooker. Declaring the games open, the director urged participants to imbibe the spirit of Olympism and sportsmanship.
He urged the participants to tap from the enormous opportunities offered by the games which is networking and friendship.
In his welcome address, chairman of the Main organising committee, Peter Odjoji emphasised that the â€œessence of the games is not just about winning but to create a forum for unity and friendship among staff in the industry, break the barrier of officialdom and red tapism.â€
He said the games also creates an opportunity for the participants to enhance their physical well-being and mental alertness.
Events of the games will be held at Ikoyi Club 1938, Chevron Recreational Centre and the Teslim Balogun Stadium.
Ikoyi Club will host tennis, table tennis, golf and squash. Chess, scrabble and swimming will be held at the Chevron Recreational Centre, Gbagada while athletics and football will hold at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.
