BENIN CITYâ€”ELDERS of Oben, Orogho,Ologbo-nugu and Urhue communities of Orhionmwon Local Government Council of Edo State, has appealed to the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, to listen to the advice of the Benin monarch, Oba Erediauwa, by awarding the N3.3billion contract for the construction of the Oben-Umoghun road, to an indigenous contractor.
In a statement by a leader of the community and former chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Edo State, Comrade Godwin Erhahon, it recalled that the Oba had earlier sent a delegation to the NDDC in Port Harcourt over the matter, adding that the people of the area wants the job to be handled by an indigenous contractor so as to hold the company responsible for any failure.
It stated that, “we have realized that the delegation of Benin Chiefs who visited your office recently in respect of the above project were true representatives of our monarch, His Royal Majesty, the Oba of Benin.
â€œThat we are loyal subjects of the Oba of Benin and His Majestyâ€™s wish is our command. That as direct stakeholders in the project, we wish to complement the position of our Royal father with a plea to you to use your good offices to extend the project from Umoghun-nokhua to Benin-Abraka Road to enhance the utility of the road, mobilize the contractor and ensure that he commences work quickly and perform thoroughly,â€ it stated.
Commending the NDDC for awarding the project, it however, added that â€œ all hands must be on deck to ensure that quality job is done and also speedy completion so that the effort of all the stakeholders including our Oba, ensuring that the contract is awarded will not be in vainâ€.
