Lawmakers acted in good faith—Abia AG

Umuahia—The Abia  State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Chief Ume Kalu, said in Umuahia that the empowerment of  Dr. Goodluck Jonathan as Acting President has saved the nation the threat of disunity.

Kalu told newsmen that the federal lawmakers’ action was in accordance with Sections 144 and 145 of the constitution.

“The constitution is very clear as to what happens when the president is incapacitated as there is no lacuna in the law,” he said.

Kalu added that the action of the National Assembly came almost late as Nigerians expected it long ago.

He, however, exonerated the lawmakers from any blame “because this action ought to have been initiated by the Federal Executive Council.

“The Federal Executive Council should have set up a committee comprising medical experts and Yar’Adua’s personal physicians to examine his state of being and recommend what needed to be done to the National Assembly, for their necessary action.”
