Jos–At least one person was feared dead and several hectares of farmland destroyed following an alleged reprisal attack on Jol village in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State by suspected Fulani herdsmen last weekend.
Fear has gripped residents of the area as the attackers believed to be revenging alleged attacks on them during the recent crisis, come at night shooting sporadically. Some of them are alleged to operate in police and military uniforms.
Already, women and children are being evacuated from the area for fear of fresh attacks by the assailants.
The attackers were said to have destroyed dry season crops on farmlands in the area while villagers who ventured to their farms are attacked and driven away.
A victim, Mr. Haruna Danjuma told journalists that the Fulani herdsmen stormed his house, broke down the fence and stole 44 cows from his pen adding, “we are now living in fears because of the constant attack by the Fulani herdsmen. The raid has become too much that we have moved our wives and children to neighbouring villages.â€
Chairman of the local government area, Mr. Simon Mwodkon who visited the area following the attack expressed sadness over the development, especially in view of efforts to reconcile the people following the last crisis.
He confirmed that sporadic shooting by the attackers was making people to flee the area and appealed to security agencies to move in to curtail their activities.
“It is obvious that Riyom Local Government cannot contain the situation alone. We appeal to the security agencies in the state to come into this issue,†he said.
The chairman urged the people to remain calm, law abiding and not take the law into their hands, assuring that necessary steps were being taken to check the attack.
