Ibori Golf and Country Club, Asaba last Saturday was a beehive of activities as Ikeja Golf Club came calling. Having suffered a home defeat when IGCC visited , Captain Kunle Ogunleye and his team had revenge on their mind as they take on IGCC. But after a grueling encounter, the golfers from Delta State made it two over two as they again defeated Ikeja Golf Club 23-20 in the return leg of the InterClub Matchplay in Asaba.
The Lagosians came to Asaba prepared for a revenge and they actually took the fight to the Deltans. The team made up Muyideen Olaitan, Chris Obijie, Chidi Tobias, Kunle Ogunleye, and some notable Ikeja players held IGCC to a standstill and at a point, the Ikeja players created a scare as they led for a while before the Asaba players bounced back.
IGCC Captain Daniel Mayuku who did not compete in the matchplay as a result of the limited number of players ferried in by Ikeja, was happy with the result. “I was confident that we will defeat Ikeja because I know they will not be able to play on our course. Unlike, the 10 holes Ikeja Golf Club, our course is bigger and more challenging and most of Ikeja players will not survive on our courseâ€, Mayuku said.
IGCC Lady Captain Faith Okoh-Baya described the matchplay as a good experience for both clubs as it provided the atmosphere for members to play and interact. Okoh-Baya won her doubles and individual events against Ikeja.
Okoh-Baya would have emerged as IGCC Lady Captain but stepped down for the outgone Lady Captain. Thus she comes with a lot of experience and commitment on how to take IGCC ladies to the next level.
