Group urges support for Jonathan

By George Onah
Port Harcourt—A socio-political pressure  group,  Community Watch of Nigeria, has called on Nigerians to rally round Acting President Goodluck Jonathan for him to succeed in his new role in the nation’s polity just as it prayed for President Umaru Yar’Adua’s speedy recovery so he can return to his seat of governance.

The group based in Eket, Akwa Ibom State, praised Yar’Adua for his approach in solving part of the Niger Delta question, explaining that the amnesty programme presented him as a genuine and peaceful leader and therefore urged Jonathan to pursue the programme with greater zeal.

The group in a communique issued  in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, yesterday said, “The proposed 10 percent equity to oil gas host producing communities should be converted to 10 percent crude oil/gas volume and shared as per the quantum of oil/gas production of each state of the Niger Delta.”

Signed by its president, Chief Samingo EtukAkpan, it says “The arrangement would make Nigeria to have two seats in OPEC and the 10 percent equity share to oil/gas host producing communities should be managed by a committee set up by the Niger Delta Ministry and made of persons of proven integrity from the region.”

It pointed out that “as part of the post amnesty programme for sustenance of peace in the Niger Delta region, the president should redeploy Obong Ufot Ekaete  to the petroleum ministry while Elder Godsday Orubebe should take charge of Niger Delta Ministry.”

The group also applauded eminent Nigerians who pressurized the National Assembly to empower Dr. Goodluck Jonathan to be empowered as Acting President thus “putting enemies of progress and unity of Nigeria to shame,” adding that “the Federal Government to release in a timely and accurate manner all funds approved for the Niger Delta Ministry and Niger Delta Development Commission, respectively, so as to shore up the growth of the region.
