Anambra State deputy governor, Dame Virgy Etiaba, has expressed satisfaction with the conduct of penultimate Saturday governorship election in the state by Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, even as she urged other contestants to close ranks with the governor-elect and deputy governor-elect in order to move the state forward.
In a press release, Etiaba said the much awaited governorship election in Anambra State has come and gone with just over 300,000 Anambrarians ‘allowed’ to participate in the exercise. “While the electoral register was defective and not completely fit for purpose, there was no evidence that any particular candidate had an undue advantage as a result of that blunder by INEC.
“This should therefore not diminish the laudable and commendable conduct of our people in the process as they did not resort to carnage. This should also not devalue INEC’s declaration of the actual votes that were validly cast and accurately counted by the agency. These indeed made a refreshing change and given that the margin of victory was way above any known statistical margin of error, the result of this election is commendable, she said.
The deputy governor continued: “The governorship campaign and election were characterized by peaceful conduct of the candidates and their supporters. I congratulate His Excellency Mr. Peter Obi and his running mate Mr. Emeka Sibeudu on their victory and also congratulate our great leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, Ezeigbo Gburu Gburu, his wife Iyom Bianca Ojukwu and our party APGA.
“It is important to also point out that this victory is a collective one for all the other candidates in the governorship race, a victory for Ndi Anambra and for democracy in Nigeria. While it is too early to be complacent, we may now be moving in the right direction towards achieving acceptable democratic norms in our country, where legitimately cast electoral votes will be counted and announced.
“As I bow out of the service of Anambra State government on Tuesday the 16th day of March 2010 in line with my agreement with God and the good people of Anambra State, I will do so with a great deal of pride that I came, saw and did my best towards the upliftment of our people. Many thanks to all those that have contributed to the success of our APGA government so far namely; Traditional Rulers, Leaders of Thought, Civil Servants, Religious Leaders, Civil Society, our Women and Youth, as well as others too numerous to mentionâ€.
