Delta House suspends ex-Speaker over Budget

By Austin Ogwuda
Asaba—A MEMBER representing Ndokwa East constituency, and a former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Dr. Olisa Imegwu was yesterday suspended by his colleagues for three months for going to the press with projections in 2010 budget proposals presently being considered in which he vehemently cried out over alleged marginalization of Ndokwa people.

He was similarly suspended for three months when he was impeached on 22 April 2008.  The members were angry over recent  news reports which was followed an advertorial in the Vanguard edition of Monday this week in which Ndokwa people alleged marginalization.

In moving the motion for his suspension the member representing Burutu II constituency, Mr. Funkekeme Solomon said “this publication is intended to portray the government as insensitive and going to lampoon the members of the House. I move that for presenting a wrong picture and bringing his people on a budget that is under consideration be suspended from this chamber till future notice”.

Majority Leader Mr. Emeyese although was in full support of the suspension pleaded that it be pegged to three months which was unanimously adopted when put to vote. Only a member Mr. Abele Oshevhire rose to his defence and wanted his colleagues to tamper justice with mercy saying “to err is human to forgive is divine. It behooves on us as human beings , although the offence is grave to tender justice with mercy”.

… the offensive communiqué

The people of Ndokwa East local government had in  a communiqué signed by Mr. Mbanugo Ogbuefi and others, said the people  observed that from “his (Imegwu) briefing especially as the Chairman, Works Committee of the Delta state House of Assembly that a total value of projects awarded is N134 billion on just one sub-head of three sub heads under the Ministry of Works in which Delta South senatorial district is to have 66 billion naira, Delta Central senatorial district  to have 43 billion while the Delta North senatorial district where Ndokwa East which is the live-wire and the only producer of oil and gas being economic may stay of the state to have about 25 billion  out of which, Oshimili/Aniocha federal constituency will have 18 billion naira, Ika federal constituency  will  have 4 billion and Ndokwa federal constituency will  have only 3 billion”.

”It is sad to note that the only viable projects in Ndokwa east which is of course is the much orchestrated Aboh road had been recklessly abandoned  for several months with only one excuse, Setraco had not been paid.

“It is also settled that the Delta Micro Credit programme (DMCP)  for which Delta state has a Central Bank award did not have any impact on the Ndokwa East people, neither did the DESOPADEC which some cheques were negligently dishonored till date.

“The people of Ndokwa East are asking is it because we are non violent? Are we being punished for being peaceful and adopting dialogue as the best form of negotiation”, the communique added.
