Anambra : Rights activist urges free, fair poll

By  Innocent Anaba

AWKA—The  Executive Secretary, National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, Mr. Roland Ewubare has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to ensure that tomorrow’s governorship election in Anambra State is free and fair.

NHRC boss also called on the police, political parties involved in the election and other relevant agencies to ensure that  Anambra people witness a free, fair and transparent election.

Mr Ewubare, who spoke in Awka, on the Anambra governorship election said,“we strongly believe that the election will be litmus test for the 2011 general elections and as such we request that it is imperative that all the necessary arrangements, particularly in the realm of security and logistic support be put in place to ensure a free and fair election.

We want to utilize this medium to call upon all stake holders, particularly the candidates who have offered themselves up for election, to  play by the rules before, during and after the election. All parties, candidates and their supporters should eschew the unwholesome relics of Nigerian politics exemplified by violence and thuggery.

“Elections should not be seen as an end but rather a means to fulfill the yearnings and aspirations of the people who form the basis of the mandate up for grabs,” he added.
