In Akwa Ibom State, women, in their hundreds, all dressed in black, yesterday, rained curses on assassins, blackmailers and other violent criminals as well as their sponsors in the state; praying God to fortify the people and cleanse the land.
They prayed at a solemn assembly tagged: Akwa Ibom Mothers Pray, to mark the end of a three-day fasting and prayer declared by the state government in honour of some women killed by kidnappers two weeks ago, when they kidnapped General Edet Akpan, the former Director General of National Youth Service Corps.
The latest killing inside Qua Iboe Church, Iwok 1 in Nsit Atai Local Government Area brought to three women so far killed by kidnappers, including the 22-year daughter of Mr Aniediabasi Udo, the chairman of Abak Local Government Area.
During the event rounding off the three-day fasting and prayer held at Ibom Hall grounds, Uyo, the mothers asked God to change the hearts of kidnapppers; keep their children from evil and judge the sponsors of the heinous crime. Ultimately, they wailed to God to complement the state government’s effort in providing lasting peace and security to the citizenry.
Addressing the people, a one-time Minister of Women Affairs, Obong Rita Akpan, who coordinated the programme, declared that the women were mourning the loss of their freedom and the fact that “Some of our children have gone astrayâ€.
Governor Godswill Akpabio, who led other government dignitaries to grace the event, said the prayer was necessary because without God, no human can truly provide a lasting security.
