Umuahia—ABIA Government has commenced the monitoring of its staff at the local government level with a view to detecting ghost workers in the local councils.
The government had complained of ghost workers in the local councils and that practically all the 17 councils have large numbers of ghost workers in their employment.
Most of the recently dissolved council executives in the state, whose two year tenure expired last January owed their workers arrears of salaries and allowances, ranging between three to seven months.
The former chairmen had blamed their inability to pay their worker to the large number of ghost workers. Incidentally, some of the ghost workers were employed by stakeholders in the various councils, including some top civil servants in the councils as well as political leaders.
