Zambia coach Herve Renard has said that his charges did not deserve to lose to Nigeria in their Nations Cup quarterfinal match held Monday in Lubango.
Despite dominating possession and holding the Nigerians to ransom, Zambia lost 5-4 on penalties but rather than lash out at his wards for frittering away the chances aplenty that came their way in the course of the match that lasted two hours, the French-born tactician, rather heaped praise on his players.
Renard said his squad dominated play and were bitterly unlucky not to have won “Tonight we did not lose against a better team, but against Nigeria, which is a strong team, who qualified for the World Cup. We played better,” he said after the tie.
“I’m very proud of my players. Congratulations to Nigeria. Our strategy was good, but unfortunately we did not score. We missed chances but no problem: Zambians can be very proud of their team.”I am very satisfied with the play of the team, I can not blame my players, who played very well and dominated the game,” he concluded.
