ABEOKUTA – HUNDREDS of Action Congress (AC) loyalists today thronged the Ijebu-Ode, country home of the Governorship candidate in the 2007 polls, Otunba Dipo Dina who was killed Monday evening by unknown gunmen just as more details of how he was brutally murdered began to emerge.
The “Endurance Lodge†located in the GRA of Ijebu-Ode was full of sympathizers who amidst wailing and gnashing of teeth rained curses on the killers of the man they all described as a gentleman.
A condolence register had been immediately opened at the gate of the house with his Steward attending to the visitors as there was nobody in the house.
A lot of the sympathizers just decided to wait around to mourn their “leader†who would have been 50 years old come July 15th, an event which they all said they had been looking forward to in great anticipation.
The atmosphere in the ancient town was very sorrowful as people stood in groups at motor parks and other places discussing the gruesome murder.
Impeccable sources told the Vanguard that Dina was driving in his 2008 black Camry car along with his driver and a woman Prophetess when his car was blocked at Covenant University along the Ota/Idiiroko road.
But the State Police Commissioner, Mr. Abdulsalam Daura said that the late politician was killed by armed robbers, a remarkable departure from those close to Dina who believed that the killing was politically motivated
Vanguard sources said that the gunmen who blocked Dina’s car immediately opened the door and told him that they had been paid to snuff life out of him.
“He was told that somebody has paid for his life and that he should cooperate and peacefully without any struggle. Dina opened the door to get down and be able to at least put up a fight, but the men just opened fire on him and killed him.
“In fact they wanted to take away his corpse, but he was already on the ground on the road and while trying to carry his corpse, they knew time was running out, so they took his car and the driver and drove away only to go and drop the driver in Agbaraâ€, the source said.
But the Commissioner of Police at his maiden Press Conference having only resumed in Ogun on Thursday said that the politician was killed while struggling with the bandit who tried to snatch his car.
Daura explained that according to the testimonies of the driver of late Dina, Mr. Tunde Oyediran and a female occupant of the car, Olufunmilayo Olagoke, the late politician was in the car on his way from Lagos to the Atan-Agbara Road when the incident happened.
“The driver and the woman, whom I interviewed separately, told me that their vehicle was negotiating the bumps in front of the university when a car with some occupants overtook their vehicle and blocked them.
“They told me that the men ordered the three of them to disembark from the vehicle (Camry Car) which they obeyed including the late person. They now ordered the three of them to board the vehicle again but this time with the three of them at the back.
“While the driver and the woman obeyed and boarded the car, they said a hot argument ensued between the man and the bandits, during which time, the gunmen shot him in the left side of his abdomen and drove way with the vehicle with the driver and the woman in the car.â€
Leaders of the party in the state led by the Deputy Chairman, Alhaji Raqeeb Adeniji were however at the Ota mortuary to take the corpse of the late politician to Lagos for proper safekeeping
Secretary of the Party, Alhaji Abimbola Awofeso was shocked and short of words when contacted by Vanguard managing only to wonder “why are people this callous†after reciting several verses of the Quran.
A meeting of the party leaders has however been scheduled to hold today in Abeokuta to deliberate on the killing.
