Players and officials of Sunshine Stars of Akure had a traumatic experience in Ughelli, Delta State on their way to Oleh for the NPL week 14 fixture with Warri Wolves Last week. Former player of the Akure based side Johnbull Edeki and a group forced Sunshine Stars players into hiding which lasted about six hours. Edeki was said to be demanding for the balance of N1m sign-on-fee.
Narrating their ordeal, team Manager of the Sunshine Stars Rasheed Balogun said. It all started when they turned towards Oleh from Ughelli junction and were stopped by a car later identified to belong to Edeki. Inside the car was some mean looking guys.
â€œClub secretary Clement Olagundoye and I were forced back into the bus after our driver had been severally assaulted. We were taken to a location where there were other armed men and they demanded for the money the club was owing Edeki.
WeÂ gathered all the moneyÂ with us amounting to N200,000Â plus a cheque of N800,000Â which he refused. It was then an S.O.S call was made to our Governor Dr. Olusegun Mimiko who in turn called his Delta state counterpart Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan who swung into action ordering the state policeÂ command to search for us within an hour and fish out the culprits.
The culprits were later arrested and taken to Asaba and with a further instruction to be taken to Abuja on the orders of the Inspector General of police.
