BENIN—BINI monarch, Oba Erediauwa, has appealed to the Federal Government to restore the soldiers withdrawn from the Joint Task Force in the state immediately after this Saturday’s House of Assembly re-run election in Etsako Central local government area of the state.
Meanwhile, the former Deputy Governor of the state, Reverend Peter Obadan, has described as wasteful the deployment of an Assistant Inspector General of Police from Abuja, to Edo State to conduct the re-run election, saying the election was being treated as though it was a national election.
In a short statement signed by the Secretary to the Benin Traditional Council, Frank Irabor, the Oba also appealed to politicians in the state to maintain peace in the forthcoming election, adding that the security of life and property must be held in high esteem and that election should not be seen as a do- or-die affair.
On his part, Obadan, who also is a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), argued that the deployment of an AIG to conduct the election when there was a Commissioner of Police in the state was creating the impression that there may be plans to manipulate the election.
According to him, “ the Inspector General of Police is saying to us in this state that a Commissioner of police cannot contain a Local Government or he is doubting the competent of the Commissioner of Police. But of course we know that is not true.
The commissioner of police here is level headed, he is forthright, but just because there is intension to manipulate the election, police are being drafted from the South West and North. And an AIG is being asked to come and conduct a Local Government election which is a waste of resources.
“This is a country where we actually do not give account and it is a shame. You have the Governor of the state as the Chief security officer of the state. As the chief security officer of the state, he sought the permission of the President, to help contain the kidnappings and the killings in the state, with the introduction of military men and that was granted.
And because of Local Government election, we are being told that these military boys are being withdrawn. It is a show of power at the risk of your own people†he stated.
Commenting on the election, Obadan asserted tha“ we must call a spade a spade. A House divided against it self cannot stand, of course that is the problem of PDP. For PDP to lose the chairmanship of that Council. I think the election was concluded when they all decamped to the PDP. So you do not put a cat before the horse.
PDP must put our house in order to be relevant. But when you look at what the Governor is doing, his achievement in the state, it is a Herculean task for PDP.
